Editing


The footage was logged into rushes and was put into a document to be organised. This is done to see if the footage that we filmed was suitable for use for the final product.

The offline edit includes footage which hasn't gone through after effects and have masks and composition added towards are put into a rough timeline of how long the official product would be.

The strengths of using the post-production techniques are that they add a sense of believability towards the product as for the audience seeing a space background within a window seems like our actors are in space which in reality they are not this is seen in the final production at 0:53 where the characters are talking to one another while in the background on the window a space background is seen through the window. Without the post-production techniques of masking and composting the background and replacing them with spacey and futuristic elements, it would look bland and not real for the targeted audience also the sci-fi element of the television show will be lost as the element of space is not seen only mentioned losing the believability of the show.

The weakness of the post-production techniques within the 0:53 scene is that if looked closely little gaps of light from the room outside is seen due to the mask path not covering the light this towards to the audience could be distracting taking away the believability for the audience as the visual effects added towards the scene are clearly presentable due to a graphic mistake. As well as the morphing of the space background due to the mask pathing is distracting due to the sheds of light passing through the visual effects.

If given more time to improve on this post-production technique. The outside room lights would be turned off to make it easier to morph the space background for each frame as the light passes through little by little each time. This will make the Post-production techniques better adds believability towards the audience as the distracting element is gone making the audience notice the characters more but as well make them know that they are in space.     

The two videos are of the final visual product and then a time lapse video of me editing the whole thing together which Includes adding text over some visual effects scenes for the credits. The opening sequence which is the last minute of the video shares some of the same shots shown previously but has a filter over them turning it blue to add the effects of the Sci-fi genre and to also obscure the scenes to make them new and fresh for the audience eyes as they don’t want to see the same thing again so it has been changed slightly for the audience. Captain Crain is shown last in this sequence as the music drops during his entrance this adds an effect towards him making an impact since he is the main character of the show he should be feature last so the audience remembers him.

The shot-reverse shot which includes the window being masked with a space background was added to show the panic of one of the characters as the character are in the unknown and unexplored regions of space. This as well shows more of the location of where our characters are.




The tools used in final cut pro were mainly the text tool and the trim tool to cut out unnecessary elements such as the cut and actions also make the production flow seamlessly.


The trim tool to shorten clips to be suitable such as the end and start of the clip.


Select tool to pick out certain clips and to either rearrange them or place somewhere else.

The text option was used to add the credits above the final footage. Different options shown here do different things such as fading the text or adding a space background with matching text.   




Audio levitation to fade the audio so it does not peak and ruin the footage as it either too loud or to quiet. Also to add other elements to fade out the sound because if cut would be jarring so the picture here shows the audio being faded then another sound is added which is the sound of an explosion.

D1-UNIT 3 RESUBMISSION

How meaning is created in Strayed Above The final media product is in line with client brief due to the visual and special effects. The visual effects applied which include creating a mask path around screens , windows as well as compositing footage to fit within a certain scale. The visual effects show the damage of the  infrastructure to the spaceship as the screens in the spaceship go dark or down meaning the signal has been lost or damaged as before it was working fine before the explosion. The special effects makeup used within the teaser scene as well show how the explosion of the ship has affected crew members such as Kyle Black and in which shows how life is on board the spaceship as communication systems have stopped working and the crew have taken damage. Unit 3 -M2

Resolving Legal and Ethical issues When creating this product legal and ethical issues have to be considered for. Such as the music for the show we cannot take a music track which is not royalty free as this is illegal. This will cause complications for the product which might halt the time of production and also might not be able to even screen the show if copyrighted music is heard without the use of a license. The plot and the story of the show can’t be taken from another SCI-FI show as well as this will be just copying ideas and would be stealing another IP’s content for our gain so we should be able to research and create our own ideas for the show while including the brief which was given towards us. The ethical issues that may arise is the use of our makeup since one of our actors is Muslim the use of proper gelatine will go against his beliefs and wouldn’t be allowed so a substitute gelatine will have to be used when creating our special effects.
