M1 and D1 UNIT 17 RESUBMISSION
Issues and risks for the production for Strayed above and the Viability of planned Visual and special effects.
The use of our special effects
within Strayed Above do come with some risks and hazards to consider, Such
as the special effects of the laceration towards Kyle black (Abu Taher) The severity the laceration
on the forehead adds to how damaging the explosion at the back of the
spaceship has affected the rest of the crew and if Kyle Black has a damaging
cut then how are the rest of the crew within the ship?
The effect on how real the laceration will appear on screen will
depend on the use of the 3D gel as it doesn’t take long to create but if
done incorrectly can cause the build-up of time to be lost and effect
production time and the overall production. Since one of our actors is Muslim
will need to use vegetarian gelatine when mixing for the blood if not used this
will cause an ethical issue. So, we need to be considerate when creating the
fake blood and aware what is being used. This may make the fake blood look different when filming but has to be used due to a moral issue. To combat this
not a lot of fake blood will be used and no close-up shots of the laceration
will be included to show the detail of the laceration ruining the whole effect. The believability of the make-up will be shown through how
well applied the make-up is. If the make-up is not smoothed around our actors’
skin and looks bulky and bumpy the effect is lost as audiences can clearly see
the effect and does not believe it is a real scar. The make up as well has to
match the skin tone of our character as it is the skin splinting the colour of
the skin will not change but only will be covered in fake blood if not matching
the skin tone audiences again will not believe the effect within the
production.
The strengths of using 3D gel is that it is ready pre-made before hand and can be applied easily when heated up and it melting by heat causing it to be smooth and not bulky on the skin. A weakness of this however it does cool quickly so the effect has to be applied quickly this can be rushed so the effect can be lost to the audiences.
The hazards with the using other special effects makeup such as
latex as it may cause an irritation or burn if someone is allergic to the
substance which can cause the risk on one of our actors so a test needed to be
carried out to see if they were allergic and if they were then the latex should
not be used as this can cause harm and is not good morally or ethically.
Another hazard would be explosions on set they will have to be virtual as no fire safety experts were around during the time of filming and we are not qualified to commit these controlled explosions or pyrotechnics on a model within a building or outside as this will or would have caused serious injury towards the cast and crew that would have been on set if this was carried out.
When filming on set for Strayed Above since the set is narrow and not wide. Lighting and camera will take up space within the set as well as cables. To counteract the risk of injury by trip hazard by the cables or equipment cables should be taped down on the floor and be marked as the indoor lighting will be turned off when filming. Indoor lighting should also be turned on when equipment is being moved or crew and actors are moving as well to avoid collision with the equipment and causing accidents. This also relates to our risk assessment on falling objects and injury to cast and crew. During the scene where Captain Crain falls down cables should be taped down and away from the set if the actor falls on the cable this can cause the equipment to fall and be damaged as well as a serious injury to the actor or crew member.

| Our risk assessment has been filled out to show and highlight what hazards there are such as object flying, moving, falling and sharp objects which relate towards to the spaceship model. |
As well the spaceship pictures were taken in front of a green
screen so keying has to be done properly to add the viability that the
spaceship look like it is in space as the green screen will be keyed out and
replaced with a space background. The spaceships since being made out of
plastic and were cut can have sharp edges which can causes a cut or bruise if
not handled properly or without care. So, a risk is the handling of the models
as they can cause a painful cut.
The strength of using the spaceship model is that the characters
will have location to show their story to audience. The effect of using a non-CGI
model is that it will look realistic towards the audience as materials are real.
A CGI model will require much more time to generate the whole body and would
have cost production time overall.
The weakness of the spaceship however is that keying out the
background is slightly difficult due to the ship being silver and the way we
have position the model in front of the green screen effected the overhead lighting that will be reflected on the spaceship.
