Applying codes and conventions to Strayed Above


Our footage that was shot for Strayed above meets the codes and conventions of a Sci-fi television show.

Costume: The two characters wear Blue dark mechanical worker’s suits or cargo jackets. These resemble spacesuits. They are workers upon the spaceship and their clothes resemble that. They are similar to what astronauts wear upon space stations. They protect the body but have mobility for the characters this is expected upon a spaceship. Captain Crain wears goggles. Goggles when worn are meant for repairing and creating items. It also used for protection Crain is wearing them for both. Since he is exploring the unknown of space he is protecting himself with Goggles. Kyle black played by Abu Taher has a laceration around his head this shows he has been hurt by the explosion. 



Setting: The setting is upon a spaceship the props and environment has been remodelled to give the feel of a futuristic environment. There are machines with buttons and screens. Machines are seen as improving and technology is big part of Sci-fi. The lighting is low key or uses dark blue gels space is a huge fearful atmosphere and light often alludes to safety or peace but in the teaser they are attacked so no light is present.

Camera angles: The camera angles used in the recorded footage is medium shots and two shots to be use in Shot reverse shots. The angels and placements of the camera show the environment our characters will be placed and their reaction towards it such as them finding out the ship has been damaged. In Sci-fi shows the environment around the character is important as it might be a new place they are not used to or we see what they are dealing with or if they are comfortable with their environment.  On the space monitor we see different videos of space and a dimension suggesting this is in another world or a place far away.



Characters: The two characters in the teaser scene are shown to be explorers. In the beginning Captain Crain is looking at different planets and systems on his screen he is exploring. The two are also shown to traverse around looking for a way to fix their ship. Captain Crain character is the typical fearless leader saying powerful words to his workers to help him and is shown to do anything to finish the mission given to him. He is also shown to have a sidekick or a companion with him this is Kyle Black who follows Crain. The sidekick is shown in multiple Sci-Fi films and television for examples the films Back to the future with the sidekick of Marty and Star Wars with R2-D2 and CP30.

The marketing of Stayed above will include the opening sequence of the show as mentioned in the brief this will be displayed on adverts on the BBC 3 platform as trailers or short snippets or scene from the show saying Strayed Above coming soon. This will also be on other social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube this will entice the audience and will make them go onto the BBC 3 platform and search and watch the show. This will be done by placing the opening sequence onto twitter and youtube and this will allow viewers to share the content to others thus gaining attraction. The stills from the opening sequence can also be used as posters to be placed on Facebook with the opening sequence underneath to let the audience know who is playing who. How meaning is created in Strayed Above The final media product is in line with client brief due to the visual and special effects. The visual effects applied which include creating a mask path around screens , windows as well as compositing footage to fit within a certain scale. The visual effects show the damage of the  infrastructure to the spaceship as the screens in the spaceship go dark or down meaning the signal has been lost or damaged as before it was working fine before the explosion. The special effects makeup used within the teaser scene as well show how the explosion of the ship has affected crew members such as Kyle Black and in which shows how life is on board the spaceship as communication systems have stopped working and the crew have taken damage. Unit 3 -M2

Resolving Legal and Ethical issues When creating this product legal and ethical issues have to be considered for. Such as the music for the show we cannot take a music track which is not royalty free as this is illegal. This will cause complications for the product which might halt the time of production and also might not be able to even screen the show if copyrighted music is heard without the use of a license. The plot and the story of the show can’t be taken from another SCI-FI show as well as this will be just copying ideas and would be stealing another IP’s content for our gain so we should be able to research and create our own ideas for the show while including the brief which was given towards us. The ethical issues that may arise is the use of our makeup since one of our actors is Muslim the use of proper gelatine will go against his beliefs and wouldn’t be allowed so a substitute gelatine will have to be used when creating our special effects.
